Plan B Games, publisher of Azul and Century: Spice Road, plan to launch a new branch this June, at Origins Game Fair 2018. With it comes the announcement of the game, Reef.
The new branch, Next Move Games, are planned to focus on lighter themed games with deep strategy. The hope is that the games will stick to the mechanisms that fans have come to expect from Plan B.
The games will feature the same high-quality components and detailed illustrations that have been featured in games like Century: Spice Road. Finally, the weirdest part of the announcement is that like Azul, all their titles will be four letters long.
As promised, four-lettered Reef, will be developed by the creator of Century: Spice Road, Emerson Matsuuchi. The illustrator, Chris Quilliams, has also built a large profile, having worked on Archipelago, Arboretum and Babel.
In Reef, you play as the eponymous reef itself. The aim is to select colours and patterns in which your reef will grow. Interestingly, you score more points depending on how big and beautiful your reef is.
While it has not been announced how many players can be involved in one game of Reef, it is suitable for ages 8 and up, and plays in approximately 30-45 minutes.
Those who pre-order will unlock a "free exclusive promotional item", as was the case for Azul and Century: Spice Road. Reef will be available to pre-order on April 16 at Next Move Games' website.
